Want to maximise your headwear looks but budget is an issue? Here are great tricks to mixing and matching looks while minimising your costs. Fresh looks made easier.

Let’s be honest, we LOVE hats. Turbans, scarves, hats of all colours, shapes and sizes, we love them all. We would be happy with a new hat every day. At the same time, we realise that budget is an issue and often women are looking for ways to add variety and fun without breaking the bank. So here are some great ways to make your headwear wardrobe go a little further.

Start with the Basics

The first step to a versatile headwear wardrobe is starting out with a couple of nice pieces. From there you can build your looks and add variety. If you’re new to wearing headwear or if this is your first time after hair loss, be sure to read our articles here on the blog with great tips for picking out the right fabric, shape, and style for you. Or make an appointment with us to try headwear on in person to find your favourite styles.

Keep in mind that quality is important. Sure, we’re biased but we want everyone to have beautiful, well-made headwear that will hold up to everyday use. That means hats and turbans that are sized correctly for your head and that are made of high-quality fabrics.

For most people, the best idea is to select one smart item that is right for your dressiest daytime activities (work, school, social occasions) and that can work well for evening wear. The second item should be something more casual. If you exercise or are on the go a lot, our Rachel Turban is an excellent choice. It is designed to stay on during workouts, sleep, and errands around town. The comfortable fit makes it easy and effortless to wear all day. The pop of colour and detailing give it style and personality whilst keeping it versatile for different occasions.

Top Your Look

Now that you have a few basics, you can start to mix and match. The first technique is to tie a scarf or wrap over your turban. In this picture our Retro Kimmy Turban & Scarf Set demonstrates how a scarf can be tied over a turban. In this case, the scarf is tied over to the side. The asymmetry is flattering to her face and it adds a feminine touch.

The turban is almost completely covered, but new narrow scarves or headbands could be interchanged to create new looks. This can also make it easy to change up your look during the day. Wear your work-ready turban into the office and then add a lovely patterned scarf over the top to dress up your look.  Suddenly the more formal office wear is transformed into a look perfect for a much needed meet-up with friends or partner.

Remember, you don’t have to be an expert at scarf tying. There is no one perfect way to add a wrap. Experiment a little and don’t be afraid to fasten the scarf with a pin, hair tie, barrette, or clip – all can be used to hold a scarf in place.

Under Layer

The next trick is to add a scarf under your hat or turban. This is a great way to change up your look, add a little colour, and add extra protection from cold, heat, sun, and wind. The Summer Seas colour of our Darcy Summer Hat looks beautiful against the lovely pop of colour from our Dark Plum Headband that is tied underneath. Worn on its own, the headband can be used to cover patchy hair loss. Together with a hat, the trailing ends provides face-flattering length that helps draw the eyes to the face.

Scarves can also be layered under your hat or turban. Thin, lightweight fabric will work best, without adding too much bulk. By mixing and matching scarves underneath, your headwear is transformed into a whole series of new looks. Pick colours that flatter your skin tone and bring out your eyes. Match your clothing or go for dramatically different colours for added flare.

If you have hats you wore before hair loss, layering a scarf or headbands under your old hats can put them back into use. With less hair as padding, your old hats will fit more loosely. Most hats also fail to provide enough coverage of the sides and back of your head. Adding a layer underneath will correct both of those problems while helping to keep your hat in place.

If you aren’t sure where to start with scarf tying, check out our great step-by-step tying guide. Our instructions will help you quickly and easily master the art of tying square scarves and turbans. This can help you give new life to the scarves you already have at home.
