Square scarf turban tying guide

Welcome to our square scarf turban tying guide, featuring our lovely model Esther! We hope you find it super useful and easy to do 🙂 (These lovely square silk scarves come in beautiful colours on our silk headband bandana page.)

Step 1

Fold the scarf across on the diagonal to form a triangle. Place over head with point of triangle pointing towards the nape. Ensure scarf ends are equal.

The scarf used in this guide comes as a tightly twisted silk square. This gives it a lovely crinckly texture but means it has to be unravelled to fit over the head.

Reverse view of Step 1 (Our model wears a wig liner to hold hair up but there is no need to wear anything under the scarf)

Step 2

Twist the scarf on each side by your ears. This will give a smooth scarf line around the face and prevent gaping.

Step 3

Then cross the scarf ends over at the back, on the nape of your neck.  You can either tie a bow here, off to one side, open out the bow loops and adjust the scarf ends. Or you carry on around your head and tie a double knot at the front. Once you have secured the scarf you can pull down the triangular point, and tuck in and under. If you wish to wear the scarf under a hat, the first variation works well, and if you’ve always worn your hair long gives more coverage on your neck.

Step 4

If you wish to wear the scarf close to your head – carry on round your head with the scarf ends and tie off at the front with a bow, or double knot. You can then check in the mirror, tuck in, and adjust the scarf.

Step 5

Here is the back view of the scarf tied this way. The scarf dimensions are 90 x 90 cms so this little scarf ties neatly round the head with just enough to tie in to a small bow.

Step 6

Our model is shown here wearing it under a summer, wide brimmed picture hat. You can see it just under the hat at the back, and it fills in the area which many ‘standard’ hats leave bare. (The scarf line at the front should disappear up into the hat.) It’s worth remembering by layering a scarf, any hat depth can be ‘extended’.

The other wonderful thing about this particular scarf is the lightweight paper silk it is made from, so it isn’t too bulky, or warm, to fit under all your favourite hats.  A super soft, breathable hat liner, and a beautifully coloured silk bandana when you choose to take your hat off.
